October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, an annual event designed to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. It encourages individuals, organizations, and businesses to improve their digital safety and security practices. Launched in 2004 by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCSA), its primary goal is to ensure that people are informed about the increasing range of cyber threats and to promote proactive steps to safeguard data, systems, and online activities.

This year's theme is all about putting security first in everything we do and with a continued focus on educating the College's employees about preventing data breaches, protecting personal information, and adopting strong cybersecurity practices like the use of multi-factor authentication, recognizing phishing and smishing attempts, using strong passwords, and making sure the software on your devices is up-to-date.

Throughout the month, we'll share tips, challenges, and fun activities to help you protect yourself, and our community, against today's common cyber threats.

Each week, we'll focus on one of the four National Cybersecurity Alliance pillars:

  • Week 1: Use Strong Passwords & Password Managers
  • Week 2: Using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
  • Week 3: Recognize & Report Phishing
  • Week 4: Update Your Software
Look out for newsletters, games, and prizes designed to make learning about cybersecurity engaging and practical. Together, we can build a cybersecurity-first culture where everyone plays a role in keeping our information safe.

Stay tuned, our first challenge kicks off next week!
