We've reached the final week of Cybersecurity Awareness Month! This week, our spotlight is on one of the simplest yet most effective ways to stay secure: keeping your software and devices up-to-date.

Why Updates Matter

Every piece of technology you use, from your laptop and phone to your browser extensions, runs on software. Over time, developers discover bugs and vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit to gain access or steal information.

When those flaws are found, developers release security patches (updates) to fix them. Installing these updates is like closing the window before the storm hits, it keeps the bad elements out.

Many of the largest cyber incidents in recent years, including ransomware attacks were caused by unpatched systems. In other words, skipping updates gives attackers an open invitation. Staying current isn't just about new features, it's about protecting your data, your devices, and yourself.

What Should You Update?

The good news is that KCC's Information Technology Services (ITS) department keeps all of your work software and systems updated; therefore, you do not have to be concerned with updating work systems. But that is only part of the battle as you still want to update your personal devices  and their software too.

To stay protected, make sure you regularly update:

  • Your personal computer's operating system
  • Mobile devices
  • Web browsers and extensions
  • Personal apps like banking, fitness, and social media platforms

Every Update helps reduce your exposure to new and evolving cyber threats.

How to Make It a Habit

Consistency is key! Here are simple ways to make updating effortless:

  • Turn on automatic updates wherever possible, set it and forget it
  • Restart your devices regularly, as some updates won't install until you reboot
  • Schedule a quick "tech checkup" once a week to make sure everything's up to date
  • Don't ignore updates reminders, they're there for your protection, not just convenience

Activities This Week

  • Cybersecurity Wordle - - Test your Wordle ability. Solve the puzzle and enter for an opportunity to win a $25 gift card.

To enter the raffle, complete the Wordle, perform a screen grab of your game and attach it to an e-mail addressed to moconnor@kcc.edu. Winner will be announced on November 3rd.

A few minutes spent updating can prevent hours (or even days) of recovery from a cyber incident tomorrow. Don't delay, update today! And Stay Secure!
